Day of Prayer Inspires New Observances Congregations and other religious groups nationwide are gearing up for the National Day of Prayer on Thursday. The observance has been held the first week in May since 1988. Churches across central Indiana will hold services and prayer meetings, including:
This year the National Day of Prayer has company. Humanity in Unity, an interfaith organization, is presenting "Celebrate One -- Voices for Peace and Unity," from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at North United Methodist Church, 3808 N. Meridian St. Representatives of Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu and American Indian traditions are scheduled to take part. Secular humanists, atheist organizations and other groups are observing National Day of Reason on Thursday. A session in Indianapolis will be at 7:30 p.m. at the Athenaeum, 401 E. Michigan St. Americans United for the Separation of Church and State will present speaker Rob Boston, author of "Why the Religious Right is Wrong About Separation of Church and State" (Prometheus Books, 1994).
